SOUTHWIND MIDDLE SCHOOL BAND

HOME OF THE SCORPIONS

SHELBY COUNTY, TENNESSEE

DIRECTOR: JAMES BELL

PRINCIPAL: MARCIA CROUCH

Southwind Middle School opened it doors on August 14, 1995 and so started the band program under the direction of James Bell. It has grown and flourished in the last three years.

Sixth Grade Band teaches the fundamentals. It is a year full of many sour notes and a lot of practice but in the end an accomplishment can be felt at both the Christmas and Spring Concert. They build their skills all year long to fill the shoes that our 8th graders leave behind as they go on to high school.

Seventh & Eighth Grade Band students make choices. They can choose to participate only in band class or they may choose the route of our specialty bands including Marching Band, Concert Band, or Jazz Band. To be in a specialty band means extra practice time mostly starting at 7:30 AM. As the parade and concert season draw closer, it also means some afternoons as well as mornings.

The Band Program is backed by the SMS Band Booster Club. It is an organization dedicated to helping improve the band by raising funds for uniforms, equipment, repairs, music and transportation. There is no fee to belong to Booster Club, we just ask that you give your time and support.
